Built for the Peace Country

Wildfire season, long winters and summer storms. What a Peace Country roof faces.

In May 2023 wildfires forced about 1,000 County of Grande Prairie residents from their homes and emptied the Town of Valleyview. Winters here are long and cold, and summer brings storms. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and what no roof can promise.

Wildfire

May 2023, around Grande Prairie

The Dunes West wildfire near Grande Prairie forced about 1,000 County residents from their homes in May 2023, and the Reeve reported four homes destroyed while crews saved many others. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises against wood shakes and shingles. We can build the roof as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. Aluminum does not burn; no roof is fireproof.

Valleyview

A whole town evacuated

On May 15, 2023 the Town of Valleyview, home to about 2,000 people, was ordered to evacuate as the Sturgeon Lake wildfire burned about 10 km to the northeast. FireSmart Alberta warns that wind-blown embers can travel long distances and land on a roof, recommends Class A roofing, and advises clearing leaves and needles from the roof regularly.

Cold

A long northern winter

Winter in the Peace Country starts early and ends late. Cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain, and asphalt wears with every freeze and thaw. Aluminum does not absorb water and cannot rust.

Snow

Snow guards and ice dams

Snow slides off aluminum in sheets, so we plan snow guards above doors, decks and driveways. Ice dams are an attic problem: heat escaping from the house melts snow that refreezes at the eaves. The material warranty excludes ice damming, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you.

Storms

Summer hail and wind

Insurance Bureau of Canada puts hail damage in Alberta at about $6 billion over the five years to 2025. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Very large hail can still dent metal; the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Permits

City, county or town

Inside the city, permits are the City of Grande Prairie's; around it, the County of Grande Prairie's; Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge and Valleyview have their own town offices. Whether a re-roof needs a permit depends on the work, so we confirm it for your address before the crew starts.

Why Grande Prairie homeowners choose aluminum

A Grande Prairie roof built for the long haul. From the company that installs it.

Our crews

Installed by us, all the way up here

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs every Grande Prairie roof with its own crews. The company that quotes it is the company that puts it on and answers for the labour warranty.

Profiles

Slate now, Interlock Shingle before

Our Grande Prairie job book is split almost evenly between Slate and the legacy Interlock Shingle profile. Today Slate is the usual choice, with Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam also available in nine colours, on any roof with a slope of at least 3/12.

Acreages

House, shop and barn

Across the county a property often has several roofs. Each is measured and priced on its own line, in the same profile and colour, so the shop can follow the house a year later and still match.

Tear-off

What comes off first

Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate are always removed. One layer of asphalt can stay only if the inspection finds it suitable. The quote states which applies before you sign.

Warranties

Two warranties, in writing

Interlock Roofing's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the aluminum and its finish while the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded. Our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covers the installation.

Straight answers

Grande Prairie roofing questions, answered honestly.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Grande Prairie?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, founded in 1999, and our own crews install every Grande Prairie roof. Our only office is in Calgary; there is no Peace Country or Edmonton-area office, so the consultation is on Zoom or at your home. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Grande Prairie?

It depends on the work. Inside the city, permits are the City of Grande Prairie's; in the county, the County of Grande Prairie's; and Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge and Valleyview have their own offices. Structural repairs such as rebuilt decking are the usual reason a permit is needed. We confirm it for your address and put any permit in the written quote.

Does a metal roof help against wildfire in the Peace Country?

It can be part of the answer. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises against wood shakes and shingles. Our roofs can be built as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum does not burn, but no roof is fireproof, and FireSmart advice covers the whole yard, not just the roof.

How does an aluminum roof handle hail and storms here?

Well, but no roof is immune to hail. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. The material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), so storm damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof.

Which communities does grandeprairieroofing.com cover?

Grande Prairie and the County of Grande Prairie, including Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge, Hythe and Valhalla Centre; Saddle Hills County and Spirit River; and Grovedale, Crooked Creek and Valleyview. Peace River, Fairview, Grimshaw and the rest of Northern Alberta are on edmontonmetalroofing.com: same company, crews and warranties.

What does a metal roof cost in Grande Prairie?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from Interlock® roofs signed in the Edmonton and Northern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. Treat them as a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price.
